First Steps

|  Today I took the first steps into my Manaiakalani Journey. It has been an eye opening experience full of sparks of inspiration for my teaching practice. I had previously seen the Google office suite as quite limited and lamented the lack of advanced features, thankfully I was just blind to the potential of the Google suite.

| The two applications that were my main touch points today were chrome and google docs. the availability of extensions that each solve small problems in novel ways is something that I am excited to try to enhance my teaching practice. What I am most excited about however is what I learned about Google Docs. I rolled my eyes when Google Docs was mentioned as my main focus but the options it provides are seemingly boundless. The way it allows you to lay out information like an updating table of contents and the ability to use Goggle Docs as a creative space.

| What I really want to take back to my classroom after today is the fundamental information about google docs. How to reference inside a document how to lay out a document with a table of contents. I also want to be creating activities that gets the students to really dive into the learning and challenge each other and I think (at least in part) I have gotten the information I need for that today.

  1. I agree with you Robert re google docs. The creating of activities for deep diving into text - creating of own critical questions I am going to use also with my students. Have no doubt your students will enjoy what you will take from today into the classroom.

  2. Ka pai Robert. I'd be interested to see what your students gets from your increased knowledge of Google Docs. I too am still learning more every week about what seemed like such a simple tool. What were some of the extensions that you enjoyed today?

    1. Thank you for your comment! I think the extensions and websites I was most excited about were the were the background remover and the doc to form programs. But That definitely got blown out of the water today with things like Toby and Google Keep!

  5. Hi Robert,

It was great to meet you this week, and I look forward to working alongside you for the rest of the course.

I can relate to your initial sentiments regarding Google products, having been raised using Microsoft software. Having said that, I was also pleasantly surprised by the extensions and add-ons that existed and which plugged the gaps that I had come across in my time using Google products. I too am beginning to imagine ways in which I can put these tools to use in my teaching.

Thanks for your reflection and for the contribution of your sense of humour across the course of the day - you had me laughing on a number of occasions!
